Researching laser/light combination to install on PPQ 5" SF Match. Have seen some good and bad reviews on the Streamlight TLR-8AG Flex Gun Mount White LED Flashlight with Green Laser. Have found a new unit on line for $250 TTL. Is seems rather small compared to surefire lights but it only weights half as much. Gun loaded with 20 rds, plus red dot is getting 56- 58 oz. Laser prices range from $100 to $500 so this falls mid range price wise. Feedback would be appreciated from the group whether this is a good product, does the laser and light add to improving your shooting performance. The gun is primarily used for target range and recreational, and possible home defense. If you recommend other laser light products or models, that would be helpful. Last question, holsters for PPQ Match on not common on most holsters web sight and with this light may have to been custom made. Level 2 drop leg cost without light was $250 which a think is a little rich for an open carry pistol. Look forward to your comments on the laser. I'll put in
another query about holsters.

Streamlight makes good products. I've used several of their WML and handhelds, always been satisfied.

I use a TLR2-HL-G, which isn't exactly the same (it's a much larger light).

I'm going to suggest a laser will not be especially helpful to your shooting performance. I think you would get much more bang for your buck by adding a red dot optic.

Lasers are useful for confirming your aim point and shooting from non-standard positions, but red dots provide many of the same benefits with much better accuracy and ease of target acquisition.

One plus is laser can, in some cases, be a powerful psychological deterrent. Although, I'd suggest if you find yourself in a situation where you have to point a loaded gun/laser at someone, I'd not rely on the laser to do the talking for you.

Thanks for the Good advise. Would like to pick your brain if you be so kind.
Was a shotgunner for years but age and cost caught up so moving on to pistol shooting.
I bought the PPQ 5" SF Match a few weeks ago. Last one in stock $1200 TTL vs new PDP @ $2K. Use difference to up grade. Have holoson 507 comp red dot ordered, rear sight plate, Walther Dynamic trigger, Weighted oversize back strap, ZR tactical spring, 20 rd clips. Just waiting on gun smith to put me in the que.
Recently had cataract surgery. Was right eye shooter, right eye dominate. Now left eye dominate/20-15 vision and right eye is 20/50. Shooting right eye at 25-30 yards, gun sights are clear, target is fuzzy. Trying to shoot with left eye is fair to date. Sights somewhat blurred and target is clear. My reasoning behind the laser light was to help with the recoil flip and zero the green laser with the red dot at 25-30+ yards. I generally target shoot on the long gun range/ never going to be a tactical competitive shooter.
Your TLR2-HL-G is a better light but $100+ more expensive, it is bigger and heavier. I'm still kicking tires but streamlight is a quality product and is highly recommended so its it down to size and price. Just aside, If i have to reach and touch at distance @50- 300 yards, the old rifle has scope and 900 lumen rail light will take care of business.

The PPQ gun build is a work in progress. Watching U tube and reading product reviews helps but input from PPQ shooters is my preferred to stay out of the ditch. 50 yards of light coverage is all I need and I didn't want a big honker light as I intend to open carry with level 2 duty holster when i hog hunt.
After the gun work is done, will query the forum for holster input.

You are only one to reach out and I thank you for the initial response. Any feedback would be appreciated- good or bad.

Thanks again for reading my long winded post. Most of what i laid out in last post was from U tube shooters. Personally, the performance trigger that came with the PPQ was perfectly fine. It did have a little more take up than i liked but after a few 100 rds - got used to it. All the u tube shooters went on and on about the significant difference in the performance vs the dynamic triggers. So I bought one. Hope it wasn't a $200 mistake

So you suggest zero laser and red dot at 15 yds? Ill start out at zero 15 yards and move out as necessary. i will only carry the gun at the range, in the field while bird or hog hunting. Have Px storm for carry but never carry a weapon when traveling in town

I found a new TLR-2-HL G for $320 and after our discussion, leaning towards it since it only $80 for twice the light. But that brings up another question, when mounted, your light approx .89" past the barrel. The TLR8 is approx flush with end of barrel. What problems has the light past the barrel caused. What holster d run for your PP

The Dynamic Performance Trigger is great. Both of my steel frame guns have the DPT installed. I love shooting them. For me, it's too light of a trigger for carry. You might find different. I'm more of a DA/SA or DAO guy if I'm going to be in the field and might trip, fall down a ditch or suffer some other sort of misfortune.

Having a light extend past the barrel is a personal preference thing. Some may prefer the more streamlined look.

From a tactical perspective, a light that extends past the barrel may act as a 'stand off device' IE help prevent the pistol from going out of battery.

Since you asked about holsters - Once you add a light - especially a less common light+laser - finding a holster sometimes becomes very difficult. You may need to go the custom route.

Holster selection might be a legitimate reason to choose one light/laser or light over another. Virtually EVERYONE makes a holster for the Surefirex300 (light only)

The PDP SF Match is every bit as good as the PDP. Basically the same gun with a few minor cosmetic differences. I have a couple SF guns (a 5" and 4") and I'm in no hurry to get rid of them or "upgrade".

Regarding TLR2 VS TLR8, The more compact light is... (wait for it) more compact. Weighs less. Has slightly better run time but uses 1 CR123 battery instead of 2 CR123 batteries. Biggest difference is you get double the lumens and QUADRUPLE the candela rating (how bright is it shines in your face) with the larger light. If you're adding weighted backstraps, guiderods etc you might prefer the larger, weightier light. Then again, the TLR8 looks pretty nice and there is something to say for being svelte.

RE: laser zero. I would not zero my handgun laser at 25+ yards. For me, I doubt I would even be able to see the laser. On my home defense pistol I have the laser zero'd to point of aim at 7-10 yards. There are diverging opinions on zero placement and method. Worth researching a bit and and/or experimenting to find what works best for you.

Holosun red dot ought to be alright, not my first choice but A LOT of guys use them and love them. Lots of bang for the buck.

Many will probably disagree, but if I was using my gun for defensive purposes or carry, I would not install the dynamic performance trigger. It's perfectly safe, but the characteristics of that trigger are geared towards sports/competition shooting. Now lots of guys run a match-grade trigger on their carry gun, but for me, I don't have that sort of confidence.

Thanks for your input. Put me back on the trail to do more research. Streamlight now has the TRL-8 HL G. 1.2"x1.5Hx2.9L. Weights 3.1 oz, 1000 lumens, rechargeable battery. Thats the solution.

Probably watched to many cowboy movies, waist carry won't work for me. Do ou have any insight about drop leg holsters for PPQ match? Dara holsters is supposed to make a good product and has some options that haven't seen at some of the companies. Holster is down the road, need to get the gun finished and debugged.

Mine to is also a range queen and may always be. Getting too old to be walking thru the bush in twilight hunting wild hogs

I have a couple of the TLR 8s with green laser and they work fine.
