The variations themselves seem relatively minor. Is there anything really significant in terms of usability or reliability? I am shopping for a P5 and wondered whether I should favor a later variation (I have my eye on a Variation 2 that looks pretty sweet). Thanks!
There are, IMO, no highly-desirable or to-be-avoided variants. The P5 is damned near perfect from start to finish. But be careful, they are highly addictive
I see the thread is still open .My earlier post did not put in survey info as mine is a Vollzugsanstalt Mannheim ex German police pistol ,with armorers update log. It was put in service 30.4.80 and released 26.6.00.

Here's the three "safe queens", The middle one is the Italian Cat 1062 two barrel (7.65 Para/9mmx19 Para). The shooter is on it's way to Texas (from Vermont).

I'll post pics of the group, with details after I get them all in my possession.
Just took delivery of #4 on Monday (a 2nd Var8). Just purchased #5 two hrs ago, a very late production Var8, +95%, unfired after test firing at Ulm, NIB, with all items provided from Walther.
Have my eye's on #6, will know where I stand by next weekend.
Seems like a trend, really nice P5s are moving to Texas.
Here is mine if I am wrong or missing anything please tell me and give me some info thank you!!
