The P99 hit the market in 1996. R&D was going on as early as late 1993.
The rumor about the .357 and .45 have been around for as long as the P99 has. I believe Bar-Sto makes a .357 conversion barrel for the P99 .40 caliber model. I'd love for Walther to come out with a .45, but I'm not holding my breath. They did cooperate with S&W to make the SW99 in .45ACP.
