i heard walther is going to produce pistols in .357 sig and .45 acp,is this true?also when did the P-99 model pistol come out?im figuring 1999,is that the production year or the year r and d started.thnz .

The P99 hit the market in 1996. R&D was going on as early as late 1993.

The rumor about the .357 and .45 have been around for as long as the P99 has. I believe Bar-Sto makes a .357 conversion barrel for the P99 .40 caliber model. I'd love for Walther to come out with a .45, but I'm not holding my breath. They did cooperate with S&W to make the SW99 in .45ACP.

I would be interested in a .357 conversion barrel. Does anyone know how much they are? Or better yet, does anybody have one or any experience with one? If so how was it?

I have a Bar-Sto .357SIG barrel for my .40 cal. P99.  It is very nice and was worth the price I paid for it (to me).

Several moths ago, I e-mailed Walther about the possibility of eventually producing P99s in in .45ACP and/or 10mm.  They said "No".  Be advised that this was prior to the public introduction of the new .45GAP cartridge.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Walther produce the P99 in .45GAP in the future.  I, frankly, would love it and would be first in line to buy one.

It's the new .45 cartridge from Glock (GAP = Glock Auto Pistol).

It's a short version of the .45 ACP... the GAP allows higher carrying capacities that ACP in smaller frame guns. I've seen some gun mags raving about it's ballistics, of course you can always find a gun mag that's raving about just about anything.

Yeah, you're right.... I read some article to that effect and regurgitated without really thinking about it. If I can find that note I read, I'll post it.

BTW, Jarvis has drop in barrels chambered in 9, 40 & 357 for $185.

I believe the impetus to design the .45 GAP round was to put the power of the .45 ACP round into a gun that had dimensions of the 9mm and .40 S&W pistols. Some people shy away from the bigger pistols because they can't get a comfortable grip and they're more difficult to conceal; the Glock 37 supposedly addresses those concerns. -The grip dimensions for the Glock 37 are nearly identical to the Glock 17/22. However the Glock 37 is just a tad taller (1/10 of an inch) to accommodate the diameter of the .45 GAP round and still have a capacity of ten shots.

I think it's an interesting approach, but I'm not sure about the longevity of the round. Even if it turns out to be a good round, anyone who makes a gun in this caliber is going to have the uphill battle of trying to convince people to buy a gun where they have to spend twice as much on ammo as they normally would. -Lots of luck there.
