I am in the process of buying a P38 that was brought in by Interarms. It has 68 stamped on the front left trigger guard, so I am guessing it was made in 1968. The serial number is 3123xx - does anyone have a link to see when this serial number was manufactured?
Now for the real question - I live in California and p38's are not on the 'acceptable' arms list (although P1's are). I think I might be able to bring it in as curio/relic, as it appears to have been made in 1968 (hopefully before) - does anyone know if that is the case?

Thanks in advance - Ted

sounds right, but no pics. Is there an Ulm antler proof by the '68? That would then be the year, otherwise it could be anything.

I just got a reply from Walther stating that they can't date it by serial number, but that production of P38's ended in 1963 (which, of course, raises the question of what the '68' means).

That's a 1968 gun. The frame shows the Ulm proof mark and the year it was proofed, in this case 1968. 50 years old this year!
