Since I finally received replacement grips for my S&W PPK, I can now test the original grips to try and find out which lubricant or cleaner caused the corrosion problems. My first three I will be testing will be Tetra Gun Lube, Tetra Gun Grease, and Hoppe's #9 Nitro Solvent. I have some clean areas of the original grips that weren't corroded, so I will put a small amount of each item in this area. I will make sure that they don't touch each other too. I'll report back on the results in 1 week (or sooner if I spot corrosion).

What you ran into, Dep, was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. I still wonder whether it wasn't the actual grips that were the problem and not the solvents and/or cleaners that you used. (As I recall, it was Hoppe's No. 9 that seemed to be the main culprit -- is that right?)

It might well be, sadly, that you'll never know for certain ... unless, of course, you want to take the chance of running the same test on the new grips that just came in. Please note that I am not urging you to do so. :D

I am interested in the results of your tests. Searcher451 may be on to something when he suggests that you may have got a bum pair of handles on your PPK.

Still the test should be illuminating!

I am looking forward to some pictures of those Ebony grips from Eagle!.

Well I've got two more cleaners on order for testing. One I've used before with good results. It's Ballistol. It's been around since 1904. Stinky stuff (for about 15 minutes, then the stink disappears) but it works great as a CLP. And the best thing for the PPK is it DOESN'T melt plastic like some other stuff does. Black powder shooters love it. Click here for uses and more info:

You can order Ballistol here:

The other item I've ordered is called Slip 2000:

From what I've read this stuff is the cat's meow for guns. I haven't read one bad review of it so far.
