My new P99 locked up at the range today. I was using Brown Bear 115 gr. FMJs. I ran two mags full of the same stuff thru my Kahr PM9 with no problems. Since the gun locked up with a live round in the chamber, I took it directly to a 'smith. Then I called S&W ( Smith & Walther). They will send me a shipping tag so that when the gun is defused I can send it to them. I hope it isn't a problem with the gun. I like the P99. I'll keep the board posted on the results.

I had a similiar problem that turned out to be the ammo. My lockups occured when trying to load the first round. The round would come off the mag and load part way in or if it went all the way in would lock up the slide. With a lot of careful force I was able to get it open and clear the weapon. After consulting with this board I performed a careful study of the ammo I had on hand. After trying to repeat the problem it all traced back to one batch of Gold Dots. Other than that batch I've never had a problem. I was able to use up the errant rounds in a Glock. So, before you send it back to the factory I would test it out with different brands or batches. IMHO

i had that happen to me too.. turns out it was dirty ammo...
field stripped the gun, cleaned the barrel and the feed lip (is that what you call it) part of the barrel where the ammo ramps up to sit in the chamber....

it was fine after the clean....

If that Brown Bear stuff is steel jacketed and lacquered, I believe that is the problem.

Herr Walther. The Brown Bears have what they term a bimetal case. It is copper colored but I can't ascertain whether it is lacquered or not. I have used Wolf steel cased bullets in my guns and have had no problems.

Not all guns will have problems with the Russian ammo. Though I see many problems at my range when it is used with western made firearms.

The lacquer will build up in the chamber of the firearm as it heats. After so much build-up a round will get stuck in the chamber. Former Eastern-Block weapons are usually built for reliability and eat this stuff up with no problems.

AR15's are suseptable to this and I've seen case heads torn off by the extractor because a casing is "lacquered" into the chamber.

I've seen several pistols with the same problem. I hope yours is up and running again soon.

Brown Bear is not lacquered. It's copper wash.

P99s have short rifling leads. I've had problems to chamber with a couple of different types of ammo. I've learned to drop a round into the barrel chamber to confirm that it seats flushly and falls out unaided before firing new, untested ammo thru the Walther. The Walther is reliable and accurate, but you must confirm the ammo you are shooting is compatible with the gun. Incidentally, I purchased a Walther extended threaded barrel for mine and the rifling lead is a little longer and will accomodate most ammo.

I see those copper washed cases at the range every now and then. I haven't heard of any problems with that yet.

I haven't had any problems with ammo in my P99 9mm, but I have not used Brown Bear, or any ammo with casings like that.

I've also put about 700 rnds of Gold Dots downrange with no issues.
