Opinion on 3" 9mm 1911's?

Hello and I wish you and your family a great safe happy new year.

I'm wanting something I've never had, a small 3" to 3.5" barrel 9mm 1911. I've been looking closely at the Kimber Aegis Elite Ultra 9mm. It has just about everything I want and reviews say the trigger is nice at about 4.5#.

Has anyone had any experience with 9mm Kimber Ultra's? I just want one that is reliable and again reviews say that Kimber finally got it right. Many reviews that state 400 to 1000 rounds without a malfunction, something that didn't happen on older compact 1911 9mm's.

Thank any of you for your thoughts and/or opinions. I have half a dozen or so compact handguns I just got a wild hair for a compact 1911 9mm. Thank you and I wish you well.

I can not speak to the new ultra aegis elite, but we do own one of the older ultra aegis and after having it for over 5 years, we have never had any problems or malfunctions. We have feed everything from 115g to 147g both fmj and hp and it has been flawless. We also have the 4 inch pro aegis as well and that has been perfect. They easy shooters and more accurate than I will ever be.

2BNKS,

I did and then watched a Hickok video shooting one and he said the first one they couldn't get through one magazine without a malfunction. He said they didn't even try to do a review. I like the Colt looks but that turned me off big time. This 2nd one was a 45 and it was just OK at best.

I only have experience with the Springfield EMP and have had no issues with my two. Bought them in first year, my S/Ns are under 400.

Good to go.

Can't speak for others.
The earlier defenders had issues like some of the manufacturers who started producing 3"barrelled officer models. I waited til colt figured it out before i got one. My defender has been flawless with over 2000 rds through it.
So many out there and it will be fun looking for one.

My 9mm Deffy has been essentially trouble free. The only issue has been an out-of-spec magazine, which led to some unwanted slide stop engagements.
Otherwise, it has always been a very pleasant and accurate shooter, and it is a nice combination of size and shootability. Not sure what Hickock's issue might be.
I had a .45 Defender; it ran fine, and shot straight, but it was a bouncy sonafagun, and tiring to shoot. I finally replaced it with a steel officers, which is a lot more pleasant to shoot.

What I will say for the .45 as a carry piece; it is light and powerful as a carry gun. Actually, so is the 9.

None have been especially problematic.

I've been doing a lot of research on these small 9mm's and I like the SA EMP but lots of reviewers speak about it being really finicky with hollow point ammo. I don't want one that's only 100% reliable with ball ammo. Any experiences or comments about this? I'm leaning towards the Kimber Aegis Ultra 9mm.

Mine only didn't like 124gr Gold Dot +P. My P365 doesn't like it either.

Lots of better choices and they all work.
Neighbor has the Aegis 9mm and SA EMP 9mm 3"
Loves both, no issues on either, planning on keeping both.

I have a kimber crimson carry ultra 2 in 45acp 3"
(not a lot more recoil than the 9mm, sprung just right)
I have a Kimber Ultra11 and a Springfield emp both 9mm. The only ammo they have trouble with is Freedom 135 hps.

Czsuby, thank you. Which one do you like the best overall?

I just ordered a new Kimber Aegis Elite Ultra 9mm. Now my question is what after market magazines would you recommend for it? It has an alloy frame and I want to buy several mags for it but heard you need to be careful about the type of follower used in them.

Any help or comments would be appreciated. Happy New Year!

Why does it have to be "aftermarket" ?

Hello Scout,

My 1st 1911 and I don't know a lot about them. I wanted some with the extended pad on them for just a little added length. Thanks,

Jim D
Avoid 'aftermarket' mags like a social disease. There are exceptions, MecGar makes wonderful mags, and Metalform makes good mags for Colts; they actually may be factory.
When in doubt, bite the bullet and pay for OEM mags. Then, if they don't run, you have recourse to the manufacturer.

If you want a reliable 1911, go with Wilson Combat mags.

Kar98,

Thanks. Wilson Combat is having a new years sale and I ordered 4 compact 9mm 9rnd mags with a small extended base pad last night. I hope they work alright in the Kimber Aegis Ultra.

Particularly if you want 8 round mags. But they're spendy.
