Millennials: Golden eye, airsoft, Brosnan/Craig...the P99 Final Edition

Sad to see that no one on the Walther Forum has so far posted they bought a P99 Final Edition. Welp, that means I get the lucky first place spot to announce I bought one.

While I have said I do not understand why Walther chose their least popular grip color and nothing of value is added to the package including the "Final Edition" lettering that I could do without, this is the quintessential firearm for those who grew up on N64 Golden Eye, those who had owned 1 airsoft pistol that was likely a P99, and those who enjoyed James Bond Brosnan more because of the fantasy than the actual movie and loved the Craig P99 fight in his first movie role as James Bond.

Basically, I think this might be the most general population collectable firearm that will ever be. Maybe ever. The population just knows this gun. It is just amazing that the trigger is still fantastic today.

Thanks to "ShipWreck" from years ago for being one the most informative chaps about the gun on many threads, I bought, disliked the hump, sold a few...but this one stays.

Pics when it arrives.

Also... it seems pretty obvious these are going out with black backstraps...

...but Walther's own promotional materials and primary image on the website shows olive drab. Not just on graphics but on what would appear to be actual pistols. With a perfect color match.

Anyone interested in a class action suit? Maybe get a coupon for $5 off at Walther.com and a bottle of color matched paint. Oh, and a lawyer will get rich, of course :ROFLMAO:

Walther! I never forgive them for my wanted light "grey" pdp color they still show online vs the dark grey it actually is. Lame-os! :)
I admit, I only buy online. I bought from a place I've never heard of. This be my one and only time I have concerns...

"First Edition" was a thing for all of them, so "Final Edition" seems fitting.

The odd question for me, P99, PPS, PPS M2, PPQ all got a "First Edition." Where is the PDP "First Edition?"

Did the P99 have a "First Edition"?

My P-99 is my daily carry, debating if I should put it in the gun safe and carry another pistol. What are you guys doing?

I am almost certain there was one...but now I'm thinking it was a PPQ unicorn and I'm confusing it with the P99 MI6 Edition that had really bad "limited edition" on the slide
Going to be miffed if it doesn't work out since I've never seen this group before...but here is where I got mine. $750 but hefty shipping put it out the door for $789. Still shows in stock.

...and I didn't post the link. Sorry:

I know. I know. It screams sketchy.

No. You should be totally fine. All parts are still going to be around. Only concern would be the backstrap. Long ago I took a PPQ backstrap and put it on a P99. It can be done, but lots of razor blade cutting and while it fit, it was kinda not a great fit. No worse of a seam than my current HK P2000. You can see a little gap at the top on the HK P2000 and that's how it was after cutting the crap out of a PPQ to fit. The P2000 backstrap feels exactly like the P99 rubber backstrap. I haven't read about the P2000 backstraps falling apart, so hard to say how much of an issue it is on the P99 if at all. At worst, if P99 backstraps disappeared, you could make one with a PPQ. I think the PPQ and PDP are the same shape too, but I haven't done the same using a PDP backstrap.

I just purchased a P99c not long ago and it has since become my carry pistol. What are the concerns exactly?

Even if I find a carry pistol, I always put some rounds through other pistols I have available just to stay proficient with them in case whatever pistol I'm carrying needs to stop being a carry pistol for whatever reason. If I end up carrying this P99c for a decade, and then something bad was to happen to it, I would probably just switch to something else at that time. If I loved the characteristics of any pistol so much that I absolutely had to carry that model of pistol, I'd buy a spare or two, and especially so if that pistol was discontinued.

The good news about the 99-series pistols is that parts rarely break, there are multiple examples that have reached high round counts, and the magazines (mag springs) seem to last forever.

Here is a reply I received from one of the 99-series armorers I've interacted with over the years. The others had similar accounts:

Thank you.

I was looking for something smaller for summer carry and when this one was in front of me I had to make the purchase.

"And the other half?"

For Walther, James?
"For me"

Didn't want to leave you hanging there.

IMO you should carry the gun you want to carry. P99s aren't so rare as to be irreplaceable and I presume yours has no particular sentimental value. There will be many P99s on the used market for decades to come if you require another or Walther refuses to service/repair the one you have.

I'd not switch to a different gun just because the P99 is discontinued.

+1 that a second copy of your personal defense guns is never a bad idea - especially if they are rare or discontinued models.

Does anyone know if this final edition P99 will also be available in Europe?

Excellent question.

It's not listed on Walther's website (German), so it does not look good but I have not seen anything official about it.

That's what I noticed too. Also, I haven't found any offers. I assume it's an Amerincan thing.

What the what. "Chris" from Walther on an NRA youtube said they did it in green because the original was in green...
