Millennials: Golden eye, airsoft, Brosnan/Craig...the P99 Final Edition

Sad to see that no one on the Walther Forum has so far posted they bought a P99 Final Edition. Welp, that means I get the lucky first place spot to announce I bought one.

While I have said I do not understand why Walther chose their least popular grip color and nothing of value is added to the package including the "Final Edition" lettering that I could do without, this is the quintessential firearm for those who grew up on N64 Golden Eye, those who had owned 1 airsoft pistol that was likely a P99, and those who enjoyed James Bond Brosnan more because of the fantasy than the actual movie and loved the Craig P99 fight in his first movie role as James Bond.

Basically, I think this might be the most general population collectable firearm that will ever be. Maybe ever. The population just knows this gun. It is just amazing that the trigger is still fantastic today.

Thanks to "ShipWreck" from years ago for being one the most informative chaps about the gun on many threads, I bought, disliked the hump, sold a few...but this one stays.

Pics when it arrives.

Congrats! My local Walther dealer has my name on one as soon as they get them, which I'm thinking should be any time now.

See, I love the grip color and have always wanted a green P99, I wish the back strap was matching.

Out of curiosity, what was the out the door price your dealer is selling it for?

Congrats. I hope you plan to shoot it.

I wish they had just come out with a really nice, decked out P99 in black, that doesn't say "Final Edition" in big letters on the side.

$800 shipped.

I have heard only internet rumor without anyone directly quoting Walther that there are only 1,500 made? Not sure I believe it. I admit I could have missed the known quote of 1,500 though.

I have been watching gun.deals daily for the last week and have watched them disappear from my cart before hitting buy. This does suggest retailers are only getting one-two at a time. It's almost instant they vanish from gun.deals when priced at 800. Bud's 850 has sat for a bit, but they aren't listed on gun.deals, so there is a lead.

I was going to wait to see if prices dropped. Gun.deals still shows an out of stock $650. However, because they are selling so fast and there is at least a limit of some, I don't see it coming down at all before they are gone.

Totally agree.

Even if they dorky paid tribute to the "La Chase" version or even 007, I'd give it a chuckle. The green...I don't know. Those didn't sell fast from retailers during the glory days of the P99...but it is what it is.

I got a bit of push back for suggesting that despite pictures, there was no way it was going to be green because that would mean a whole new sku backstraps for a product walther was killing off. They aren't going to make an entire 3 new sku product line for something they are killing off. The "Last Edition" is just extra lines, so that makes sense.

I don't think their is painting it to match either because it's rubber. Wish there was a third color in the green/back to keep it in odds (visually interesting), but we'll see.

I mean, I guess people are buying the current Sig P series Legions and the color on those is currently a very unflattering green...

Meh.

Wish it were black too. Dang it.

Same here.

While I would have preferred a pistol with nickel plated internals for a smoother trigger pull, night sights, and an extra 20rd mag in the box, I'm just happy that they mentioned that they were discontinuing the P99 rather than just doing it and then having us find out.

I bought one. $799 + tax, shipping, transfer, background check fee.

It's on the way but hasn't arrived at my FFL yet. I'm a "pics or it didn't happen" kind of guy... but I'll be very quick with them once it arrives. Agree that these things disappeared from gun.deals very quickly. I bought mine from tombstone tactical - a relatively high volume dealer - and it looks like they only had one.

As to the collectable nature of this particular pistol... I'm not sure these "Final Edition" guns will ever be particularly valuable. I'm not sure they will even fetch more than a run of the mill P99. I was wanting to start a thread on that particularly issue but here seems as good a place as any to discuss.

I don't think many people actually recognize the P99. Despite it's objective functional and aesthetic superiority, in terms of sales and it's an 'also ran' in the polymer gun world. Even big James Bond fans will probably only have a passing familiarity, if that. In terms of PPK vs P99 the association probably isn't 1/10th as strong with the P99. I know lots of GoldenEye players but never once heard one pontificate about the virtues of the Walther P99. I might have had one person - ever - say, "Oh yeah the James Bond gun"

I'd be curious how many go out the door. If the number was truly 1,500 then these might actually be quite collectable. If the number is 15,000 then... it's just a green P99 with dumb lettering on it.

I already have a wide selection of P99/PPQ/PDP pistols to shoot from so I do think my intention was to turn this "Final Edition" gun into a safe queen. Probably still shoot it at least once, but we will see... I kind of think I could shoot the crap out of it and as long as I didn't carry or abuse the thing it wouldn't lose much value.

But who will receive theirs first?

It just got suspenseful.

LOL. Sorry to do you like that but glad you snagged one elsewhere.

Funny story...

I was checking gun.deals at a stop light (terrible, I know... but my truck drives itself anyways). When I saw one listing in stock - and only one listing in stock - I immediately pulled over and couldn't whip out my credit card fast enough. Finished the transaction right there on the shoulder of the highway. :ROFLMAO:

I thought "you know, why don't I just wait until I get home - don't be crazy about this" but I'm glad my gut overrode my brain :)

edit: looks like a few dealers have them in stock, VERY few.

Edit2: I was actually poking around... looks like grabagun.com has ONE, guns.com has TWO, the other place has ONE...
Curious how many each dealer is going to get.

Also... it seems pretty obvious these are going out with black backstraps...

...but Walther's own promotional materials and primary image on the website shows olive drab. Not just on graphics but on what would appear to be actual pistols. With a perfect color match.

Anyone interested in a class action suit? Maybe get a coupon for $5 off at Walther.com and a bottle of color matched paint. Oh, and a lawyer will get rich, of course :ROFLMAO:

Or maybe it's like the optics plates where you have to enter a proof of purchase on their website and then you get mailed a color matched backstrap of size/choice?;):ROFLMAO:

Taking a closer look at some of those promo-guns... they don't even have "Final Edition" engraved on them.

That means at one point they put out color matched backstraps on regular P99 slides. IMO a significantly better way of sending these things off.

The guy who made the final call for "Let's put a tacky engraving on instead" deserves our derision, IMO.
