www.magnaport.com has a service called "AutoPorting" which is supposed to reduce muzzle whip and recoil. Anyone familiar with the process either for a P99 or other semiauto ?

the problem with that is that it will create a break in your nice tenifer finished slide and anything they put on there won't be as durable. Personally I don't think muzzle flip is that bad on the P99. I shot a federal qualification on a TQ-15 target this wekend at the range with some marshals that were up there practicing and scored 1 point below perfect score with my P99 QA. Fun way to burn 60 rounds, for sure.

I would not do it - I do not find the reduction in muzzle flip to be that much - And, U will have a bright flash when U fire in a dark situation. Plus, in a self defense situation, U might find yourself shooting w/ the gun near your body/face - U are asking for trouble. Another thing - U will loose a little velocity, and it will be much louder.

I prev had a comped 1911 - it was usually the loudest gun on the range. If I ever had to use that gun in an indoor self defense scenario, I would have had some serious permanent hearing loss

And, it might affect your warranty.

I guess if you have an extra P99 and want to make it a range toy - go for it - maybe hard chrome the slide and barrel afterwards. But I would not do it to a carry gun.

If U REALLY have to have a comp, try to see if U can get a longer, after-market barrel and have just the barrel ported. That way U don't affect the rest of the gun.

I would add too, that for a comp to really be effective, you need hotter loads. Since Walther doesn't recommend +P in the P99, you're either never going to realize the full potential of the comp, or be giving your P99 a beating.

Shipwreck is very correct.......the ported P-99 is more of a toy than a working gun.

Everything you have been told has been accurate.........the gun becomes extremely LOUD to the shooter

The muzzle flash has a potential to disturb the shooter

Shooting the ported gun in "close quarters" can be dangerous to the shooter from the ported "Blast"

The ported P-99 I have is extremely accurate because I achieved the porting by having an extended barrel drilled.
This action did not come without problems --- the extended ported barrel has caused failure to feed problems from day one & has not completely been corrected to this date.

For a Range Toy .......... the Ported P-99 is an accurate tack driver and a pleasure to shoot........ when it feeds properly

With a ported gun, U need to cut off some coils on the recoil spring.

The ported 1911 I had was a production model, and it worked fine. They had the spring thing already worked out.

I once had a Glock 17 that I bought a ported barrel for (it was 2 inches longer). No matter how much I tinkered w/ that recoil spring (I had several that I cut to different lengths, it never did work right.

If It's not a revolver (U can have those magnaported), or a new gun that comes already ported, I wouldn't mess w/ it. And for me personally, I don't want anymore ported guns anyway.
