I recently bought a nice assortment of .40 rounds to try and finally today I got to shoot some of it. It is my birthday afterall so what better celebration that popping off some rounds!
I started with a box of 180 Gr Winchester JHPs. I got 3 failures to feed with the round stuck at a 40 degree angle into the slide. Oddly this was always the 3rd round in a 10rd mag. I removed the magazine, racked the slide to eject the round and put it back in the magazine. Fired fine afterwards. This happened 3 times our of 47 rounds (saving 3 for pictures).
I then fired 47 rounds of 180 Gr HP whitebox, probably from Miwal (have to check the receipt). The have cases marked Winchester and the bullet looks remarably similar to the previous box. No feeding failures. I did however have the slide close on an empty mag 3 times. Weird.
Finally I had a box of 180 Gr FMJs from Armscor. These kicked remarkably less than the other 2 boxes despite their bullets weighing the same. I haven't looked up their powder weights. Slide failed to lock twice. No misfeeds.
I'm working on a website http://www.ammotracker.com that allows me (and anyone else who wants) to track their ammo usage. That way you could see what bullets caused the fewest problems for a particular gun. If you are interested in that and would like to participate in beta tests, pop me an email at owner @ ammotracker dot com. I currently still working on the database schema, once that becomes 'final' I'll be coding web pages and turning on various features for people to try.
