Since GCA '68. That's the Gun Control Act of 1968. The overall dimensions are too small on the PPK, according to the GCA, thus they can't be imported anymore, unless your a government official. I've seen some police officer's able to get them in.

However it's a mute point now that Walther doesn't even make them any more.

That is why the PPK/S was developed. The "S" means "Special" to the American market. Not "Sport" as so many armchair collectors claim.

At first, the American market was the sole importer of the PPK/S. It did eventually get around some and is a fairly popular model.

Take the shorter PPK barrel and slide, put them on a PP frame and you have the PPK/S. A parts bin special, but a #### nice pistol.
