Oh no ! My P-99 broke at the Range today, so I am in morning.

Well, more accurately, the Bar-Sto extended ported barrel BROKE today -- it scared me when the gun jammed and when I tilted it down to see what was the matter - the Slide and barrel dropped off the gun's frame and hit the bench in front of me.

I said what the F**** ............. I was in a mild state of shock when my prized possesion just fell apart in front of me.

Closer examination showed NO damage to the pistol........... just the barrel broke. What happened:............ The lower foot on the barrel that supports the recoil spring & guide rod -- just SHEARED right off. It is this lower foot that engages the frame's take down latch --- so with it gone -- the Slide just slipped right off the end of the frame. When I looked inside the P-99, I saw the part of the barrel just sitting inside the channel with the take down latch.

I will be sending the barrel back to Bar-sto to see if they back their barrels with any kind of warranty. The problem looks to be a defect in the piece of steel they used........the part that sheard off was approx 1/2 inch long - that's a lot of metal to just break away. The barrel had less than 1,000 rounds through it. It had become one of the best and most accurate guns that I owned. I worked flawlessly even though it was the extended ported version that Bar-Sto no longer makes. I think they had reliability problems with the design, but mine worked fine after a trip back to them for adjustments and some heated arguements over down-time. They had my Slide for over 6 weeks !!

Anyway, I am looking for the original barrel to get my Walther back on line.

PS: Not to loose my range time - I had to rent a Glock 22 to finish out the range session. Now that was a trip ............It was like going to the dance in a Corvette Stingray....... and having to drive home in a Volkswagon beetle !!
:D

Well that's no good. :( I hope Bar-Sto will come up with something to make it good. And it always pays to keep all original parts around just in case of such an event...I've know people who have bought aftermarket parts, sold original stuff and only later wished that they had kept the orginials in case of emergencies...

I will keep you guys informed on what Bar-Sto has to say about the whole thing. Their website says it may take 2 weeks to get a question answered, but I know that the owner reads the web questions.....so I will leave it there instead of trying to call and talk to who knows ??

I did find the original barrel ..........and shes back up and running and mean as ever !! :D

By the way, I have had many gunsmiths tell me that it is VERY difficult to buy a better barrel than the one that Walther provides with their P-99's.
I only bought the Bar-sto barrel in order to get the extended version -- not trying to buy a "better" barrel.

Update on Barrel replacement

Good New !!! Ivr Stone III said he would replace the defective barrel and it would only cost me return shipping.

The lucky part is : He had one left over from the batch they originally made- don't know what would have happened if that was not the case ??

He did say "That is one of the reasons why we stopped making them as for some reason there are guns that break the lugs off. Have seen it with factory stuff to. " That is a quote

I don't remember anyone complaining about this problem with a Walther factory barrel ?? Maybe Ivr. sees more defective barrel reports than we do.

I will let you know how the replacement barrel works out when it gets here and I can get it fitted and up and running.

I saw a factory 9mm barrel on EBay for sale this week. Won't help you, but if anyone's interested, it's there.

Now that is an interesting note...can't recall ever hearing about factory barrels having problems? And I wonder if the problem would be with the .40s?

Now I don't have a .40 but from what others have said, it is a bit snappier in recoil than the 9mm. Do you think this extra "recoil" could account for the srtess that made the barrel foot come off?

Jake-

The .40 sure is a hot round - no doubt about it. But I can't see THAT much force being applied to the barrel foot with the recoil spring system installed and functioning. Just take a look at the meager take down latch that captures this barrel foot. I would expect the take down latch to break, before a 1/2 piece of barrel steel shears off !

But I am no expert in these matters ................ all I can go by is what other P-99 owners have reported or NOT reported..........until now, I have never heard of this type of failure with a factory barrel ???
