I saw a question posted elsewhere about this subject and was wondering the same thing. Others have stated they recieved a "flag" like thing for dry firing and others say you don't need it. I didn't get a "flag" thing with mine and nowhere in the manual could I find anything about dry firing.

The "flag like" plastic piece is usually placed partially in chamber with the "flag" hanging out the slide ejection port.
This is how the P22's get shipped (including from Walrep, S&W warranty repair). When I dry fire the P22, I set the safety.
I would not recommend dry firing with the safety off, unless you did have something in the chamber (like the plastic flag).
