Ok, first time disassembling the P99 AS. Using the take down lever (which is pretty stiff) I manage to get the slide about halfway off the frame and then it gets stuck. I'm paranoid about using too much force on it, for fear I might break something. Has this happened to anyone else?

What little trick am I missing here?

Do U have the frame w/ the new, longer mag release?

1 of my P99s has this newest frame. After it is 1/2 way down, I have to reach into the top of the frame, inside the grip, and push down on the trigger bad. Then the slide comes off.

My other 2 doesn't do this. But this one does. I even posted a message on my forum asking if any of the people w/ 2005 frames have this problem. If that's what ya got, then it must be designed that way.

You are the man, Ship! That is exactly what the problem was. Some light pressure and it slid right off like it's supposed to. You must be right that this has something to do with the new frame. But how can this not be in the manual? Who is going to be able to figure this out on their own unless they are experienced smiths or experienced Walther users?

I mean, it's easy once you know the trick but without that knowledge, that slide ain't coming off. You'd think Walther would be getting many complaints over this.

But enough of that. I'm happy I got mine apart. Now back to cleaning!

I had 2 before I bought this one. Mine came in - I had my cleaning stuff w/ me, and I cleaned it at the store's indoor range before I shot it. LIke U - I got stuck with this issue initially... Scared me at first - when the slide wouldn't come off :p

I haven't seen anyone else here online comment on this, so I thought I was the only one. BUt, yes - gotta be something in the new design....

I have a newer long mag release P-99AS also. One of the things I'll forget occasionally is to depress the decocker before releasing the slide. It's in the book in the disassembly instructions, but somehow I still miss that simple little step.

I also have a newer P99 AS. I cannot field strip the P99 as per the instructions in the manual. I have to pull the slide back slightly while pulling down on the takedown catch. Then I release the slide and decock the pistol. The slide will usually come off then. Once in awhile it doesn't and I have to repeat the process.

Well, I decock it first and then pull down on the slide release. On my SW99 and P99c, the slide comes right off.

With my fullsize A/S, w/ the newest frame, as per above - I gotta put that piece down inside the frame to get it all the way off...

Gotta be some new change to the design. I wonder what made them change that...

All of my P99s disassemble in the same way. I don't have a problem with my newer AF coded ones with the longer mag release or the older AD coded one with the old mag release. Maybe you guys should give walther a call?
