Is it O.K. to use those brass brushes when cleaning the barrel out? Or, will that just scratch up the inside of the barrel too much?

Yes, absolutely.

Gun barrels are made from very hard steel, indeed.

Over the summer, I was introduced to bore snakes...they work great! Little solvent, run it through the barrel 3-4 times & you're done. I recommend one size up for best results

I also use snake bore cleaner combined with hoppes no.9 solvent.Works pretty well.
