I'm currently shooting the M1, 5", in 9mm and am wondering if you can swap to the .40 by just changing the barrel and mags of course.

Nope. The barrel on the 40 has a larger OD than the 9mm. In other words, the 40 barrel is too large to fit thru the hole in the end of the 9mm slide.

The .40S&W cartridge wouldn't even slide up the breechface as it would be too wide for the 9mm slide. The barrel would be too wide on both ends. The slide would be too light for the .40S&W caliber as well.

Thanks everyone. Just thinking out loud. Really looking for a 5" M1 .40S&W. Anyone looking to get rid of one let me know. Thanks again.

Think they did when they first came out but stopped importing the cause the US market didn't really care for the paddle magazine release. I shoot USPSA, Steel Challenge and IDPA and prefer it over the button. To each their own I guess.
