The feel can be deceptive. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you because the P99 is a great shooter. The ergonomics on it are really sweet. I shoot mine in competition all the time and the weight and balance are just fine, especially when you have a loaded mag in it.
Don't judge the pistol until you have had the chance to fire one...so look around.
You can find a mag well flare on ebay from time to time if you look for it....JFYI, I don't think they are worth the time and trouble. If you practice you mag changes, you won't need the shroud.
