It really depends on how badly you want it. AC40s are relatively scarce, and they do command a high price. The last AC40 I bought was missing most of its bluing, so I got it for a bargain. Do some searching at www.p38forum.com to see what others are paying and ask the experts there.

This is in the group of 5942a to 9965b, total 14,000 It is somewhat less desirable than 'date added' or the 'no date' version, but ranked an 8 on a scale of 10.

Even though 14,000 is a considerable number, any P.38 manufactured in 1940 most likely went through a high attrition rate over the entire war.

The 'book' describes a 90% gun at $2100, 95% at $2375 so the price seems about right. The question is the 'browning finish. You'll need an expert to evaluate that, especially by photos. The further point is, if you are developing a collection, simply finding one is a big problem.
