Overexpansion is a known issue with 99gr HST's in .380 against bare gel and light clothing. This limits penetration depth. The HST's also regularly clog in denim tests, causing them to behave like FMJs against heavier clothing.

This is why, despite 124gr HST's being my tried/true/goto round in 9mm, I don't use them in .380. I could live with the overexpansion and reduced penetration (because more lead can be added until the threat abates). However, the steady failures in the denim tests make me gun shy (pun intended) when it comes to HST's in .380.

The HST's in 9mm all seem to work flawlessly - 124, 147, standard, +P - doesn't seem to matter much which is why I use standard loads (less wear/better control and equal effectiveness).
