Again, not having done it, I can only report what the Glockers say...

The polishing compound is more than sufficient to get the job done. The purpose is just to smooth out the contact points. If you're very comfortable with a stone, you could do that -- but you always risk removing more of the surface material than you really want to. I think from a "control" standpoint, polishing compound is a safer bet.

The general guide for the job is when you get a mirror-like surface, which reportedly isn't hard to achieve. As far as disassembly, yes - taking the whole thing apart is not something to be done on a regular basis. But you should only have to do this job once...
