Well guess what. After an hour and half of cleaning I got fed up and put the gun away. This evening I took it apart and the coil spring was stuck on the side of the gun on the inside because of surface attraction of the cleaner ( Hoppes #9). This spring is so tiny it's literally the size of an ant. So I put it in and everything is working fine! It was the magazine return spring which was not returning which was keeping the magazine from fitting in properly. I feel like I've solved one of those puzzles at the bookstore. The manual is fairly hopeless. Why they didn't just use line drawings instead of those hopelessly tiny blurred pictures is beyond me.
The rifle shoots just fine with a red dot, it's a lot of fun. the trigger is a bit sloppy, but I like the bullpup design. Just make sure you use a good grade of ammo, because the Aguila I used actually made me feel sick, it was so cheap.
