"Made in West-Germany" PPK

No Interarms markings PPK stamped "Made in West-Germany" on frame. Any ideas?

I am wondering why a firearm made in Germany says "Made in West German"

Nicht Deutsch.

prior to 1968, import markings were not mandated by ATF. Your pistol should have a two digit date along with a stag horn on the barrel. If your pistol was produced later on, it will have a two letter code to determine the date (if your gun is a post 1968 pistol, it slipped under the radar).

Prior to official reunification (1990) there were two Germany(s); GDR and FRG. GDR was known as West Germany in English speaking countries.

Yes, I am wondering why, if it was made in Germany, "Made in Germany" is written in English, and not German.

They just may have been playing safe with English-speakers; the last time they really vexed us it made one hell of a mess.

Other than the above, it seems likely that Ulm knew where that particular gun was headed, and marked the slide accordingly.

It was fun thinking about West Germany, the Cold War years and the Red Menace. It was easier to identify our enemies then.

Just as a minor correction to one of the replies to this post, when Germany was divided the GDR, or German "Democratic" Republic, was Communist East Germany. The FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) was the democratic western part.

My 1988 Sig Sauer P220 .45 says, "Made in W. Germany." Very common.
