Unhappy Notre Dame Cathedral is in Flames!

I am seeing it on Fox, I was there as a Kid in August, 1968. Except for the 2 Towers in the Front, all of the Church is in Flames. How sad!

Yep, I'd say the church has been destroyed. Not far from the Louvre either, they might be making efforts to keep the fire out of there. The River runs right by it but I don't suppose they can get enough water to it. I don't remember enough wood in it to burn like that....Mostly what I remember is a soft stone. Surrounded by scaffolding....someone was working on it. Someone's insurance is going to be pretty unhappy about now. What a shame. 1917

Terrible and tragic.

Not understanding how better fire suppression was not available for such an important historic building.

I am blessed to have seen it on a trip during college. Splendid building and artifacts.

I'll withhold speculation of the VERY conveniently timed fire, during Muslim and Christian holiday periods.

However, it's totally unbelievably bewildering that such an important historic irreplaceable building, constructed of 52 acres of ancient 9 century old timbers, would not have a fire suppression system among the best in the world.

It's hard to fathom that some accidental electrical surge from a construction worker power tool, or an errant cigarette butt, could possibly have initiated this blaze.

I'm very suspicious of the fire origins.

I read that they were trying to save as much of the art as they could. Hopefully a lot of the artifacts were packed up for the remodel and easier to move out.

It was an accident....so much for idle speculation.

Original construction started in 1163.., and completed in 1345.

Yesterday the cause of the fire was still under investigation, yet arson was ruled out. I never understood French logic ...

From the pictures they've shown of the interior so far it doesn't look that bad. If the cause is ruled to be the fault of the contractor doing the renovations I wonder if they or their insurance company will be stuck with paying for the repairs. Does the Church have fire insurance ? Whoever pays it sounds like it has been in disrepair for some time now.
