The QC on these pistols is not as good as it should be, sad to say. I would call/email WaltherAmerica/S&W customer service, let them know what's going on, and have the folks there send you a call tag so that you can ship the pistol back to Houlten for service.

I know it seems elementary, but did you check to make sure the safety was in the fire position, it happens to the best of us to forget to check that sometimes. If that's not the problem, I would check to see if the firing pin is moving freely.

I took the gun to Gander Mountain and there just so happened to be a Smith & Wesson tech there at the time. Though he didnt know exactly what was causing the problem, he said this is a very uncommon problem and he has never seen it before. And since ive never fired or even loaded this gun prior to the discovery of the malfunction, it must have occured immediatly after the factory test shot. So we sent the gun in for repairs and hopefully, soon, I can shoot it for the first time ever. Thatll teach me to buy a gun and never even make sure it fires FIRST. Thanks everyone for the help! And I will post the cause of the malfunction as soon as they send it back in case anyone else has the same problem in the future.

The cause could be quite elementary. One might conclude that as a result of the Umarex-Smith & Wesson "Strategic Alliance", there was a cultural exchange. Perhaps workers from Amsburg in Germany, experienced at making CO2 and alarm guns, were sent to Houlton, Maine to teach them how to make guns look pretty. And workers from Houlton were sent to Amsburg to teach them how to make real guns that don't shoot.

I just recently bought a sp22 M3. Same problem, I got 50 rounds in it before it quit firing. Something in the hammer mechanism has to have broke, a spring or something, not sure, i didnt want to take it all the way down for the fact i had bought it 2 days before and i didnt know if they might have had a seal or something internally to recognize tampering. But I sent mine in this morning. I went through a certified walther dealer and let them take care of it for me.

I just read this again for the second or third (perhaps fourth?) time, and it has made me laugh each and every time out. Thanks, MGMike, for keeping all things Walther in perspective these days.

Sending these pistols back to Houlten for examination and repair seems to be the standard MO. Fortunately, Umarex has stopped making them. If everyone who owned one stopped shooting it, well, problem solved, I guess.

Talking

For those of you that have a Walther SP22 and are about to quit on it....just don't. I got my Walther SP22 M4 out of gunbroker and could kick myself once I found out that it was a discontinued gun. Anyways, I decided to go the whole way and ordered 2 extra mags, the picattiny rail sets and the barrel weights. I also ordered a Bushnell Trophy red dot, with multiple reticles, 28mm diamater. I took my royal time to figure out this pistol and disassembled it no less than 20 times by now. I use it for Bullseye competition and figure that it must have at least 2 qualities: 1/accuracy out of the box 2/ a good match trigger. Using a rest, I was able to group 1/2" groups at 45 feet and about 1" at 25 yards. Tried CCI SV and also Eley Match. By now, I have over 1,000 rounds on it and it has loosen up quite a bit. I read the instructions on setting the trigger and THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE WRONG! or at least backwards. Out of the box, it works like a long 2-stage trigger. I worked on eliminating almost all the first stage and making the second stage an even pull, with a very short sear engagement. I measure 2.6 lbs of trigger pull and it acts as a "rolling trigger" (prefered by bullseye shooters) versus a 2-stage trigger. The trigger is now a smooth, even pull and breaks very crisp. Al these without having to use my dremel tool, polishing, etc. Anyways, yesterday I placed 4th out of 33 shooters, some with Pardinis and the like..and could have placed better if not for some penalties. Anyways, I think I will work on the grip now... a bit too large for my hand, but that's just me. I think Walther made an excellent bargain shooter, comparable to Trailsides...and just quit on the product too soon. Everybody at the Club was asking what pistol was that....so I said Robocop's! My Walther SP22 earn its place in my stable and is a keeper.

Huh.

Thanks for that report, ApacheDan. I'm not saying that I'm going to pull mine out of mothballs anytime soon, but that's an interesting report nonetheless; thanks for sharing it. Never, ever thought I'd hear the day when a shooter using an SP22 placed in the top five in a target event, probably because I never, ever thought that I'd hear about a shooter using one in competition. Huh.

For what it's worth, CDNN Sports was selling an entire lineup of odds and ends for all four models of this particular pistol, incuding a alternative grip, awhile back. You might want to contact them and see what' might still be available.

Wlecome to the forum, by the way; enjoy your time here.
