I do remember reading about SEALs carrying the PPS on Walther's product guide on their website last year. You can't get much of a better endorsment then that.

A ringing endorsement except for the notation they would probably use a shield if it had been available. Even though they had not shot one yet? Ed

That was the quote from the S&W rep. That doesn't really surprise me.

I was thinking the same thing. Of course the S&W rep will say "ours is better". I think the shield is an excellent little gun don't get me wrong, but it was more the rep and author who were getting at "yeah they would have used the shield if it was available when they had to pick." Interesting bit of information regardless how it is delivered though, thanks for sharing!

I went back and reread it and see it was the S&W Rep. so you have to take that with a grain of salt.
Does it sound like they are issued PPS pistols or they are private purchase? On the 1911 forums they usually quote articles that say the seals and other elite commandos are still using 1911's. I wonder if it is just the seals or if other units will start getting PPS's. Thanks for posting the article. Ed |

Either way that is pretty cool. I'd like to hear from the operators how it performs, or if they even use it, in very wet/sandy conditions. I've always been under the impression that the PPS has tight tolerances and wouldn't tolerate a lot of dirt....but maybe it will.
From what I know, 1911 has always been the traditional choice in SF communities. In the USMC for the basic unit issue of handguns, all of the regular units have M9XXs and the Recon/MARSOC community has the 1911 (or a version of it).

The article mentioned they use them for CCW and/or Covert ops. Not sure if that is much of a field test beyond what say you or I would be able to observe and report. While I too am curious it would have been better if they carried them as a backup on their mission kit. Still - it being specops stuff I bet any testimony would be considered classified.

I really wish Walther would rethink thier relationship with S&W since S&W does not do much to market Walther guns. If Walther ever decided to directly market their guns in the US I imagine they would be even more popular. Well at least Walther has 50 years of James Bond movies giving them more publicity then S&W does.
