PPS-9 1st. Time Out Range Report..could use your assistance

After a complete cleaning and lube (as per Dmars instructions) I headed off to the range today with my new PPS-9

I shot 140 rounds of Federal Eagle and Remington UCM and the pistol feed everything 100%. What a comfortable gun...who says its not a range gun?

Then I switched over to the Hornady 115 CD. The first round chambered fine as did the second. Then on the third round, the slide held open and the round looked like it tried to feed onto the feed ramp, but did not. It was horizontal to the barrel stuck just below the feed ramp. I had to pull hard on the mag to release it from the gun.

I reloaded another magazine and tried again with the Hornady....same result. Again I had to pull hard on the mag to release it.

I am not sure if it was due to the fact I had already put 140 rounds down the gun and it was dirty, or if my pistol just does not like the Hornady CD.

I got the gun home and gave it a detailed cleaning with the Mpro-7 and lubed it with Militech.

The gun looked great, except for one thing.....

I looked at the trigger bar when I first cleaned the gun before I shot it, and I could have sworn it was flush with the right side of the frame. After shooting it, it appears to be slightly away from the frame......Is this normal?

It could be that I did not note the proper position of the trigger bar upon its initial cleaning.

Just wanting to make sure I have nothing to worry about here.

Thank you for your input!

ps. the gun shoots right of center....anyone else experience this?

I put 200 rounds of FMJ through my brand new PPS on Saturday. Then I put 20 rounds of Hornady 115gr CD through it without the slightest hint of a hiccup. I know I need to do more than that, but there were no issues at all.

Can't comment on the trigger bar at the moment. As for the right of center, could be your sights, could be you...

140 rounds is hardly going to dirty a gun to the point of having an issue...I have managed sessions of 400 rounds of WWB without any issue (and I am sure many have run more in 1 range session)....and WWB is dirtier than Federal (generally). I will take apart the PPS here in a second to see how my trigger bar compares to the picture above.

Am I wrong in reading a post from you saying this was your first handgun? Maybe that was a different user, but if that was you, practice will help as far as aim. Other things that might help is knowing the distance you noticed the pull, if you are left or right handed, and the like.

Make sure you disassemble and clean your mags too. I have not had any nose dives or jams while firing the pistol but did notice that the followers on the two extra mags I used (for a total of four) right out of the Walther packaging did not feel quite as smooth on the follower moving while loading as the two that came with the pistol that I had already cleaned and lightly lubed. Even so I had no feed failures while shooting but did notice the top round in a full mag would tend to want to nose down toward the feedramp if you tried to hold the slide to load it slowly. This also has to do with new, stiff spring mags but should smooth out for you with mag cleaning and a little more use. Giving it a good full length "slingshot" pull on the slide is the key when loading too. Very happy with mine though and zero issues.

White and Dtech,

I am left handed.

I tried to ensure I was not limp wristing the gun.

I completely cleaned both gun and mags before I shot it.

I appreciate you looking at your trigger bar and comparing to mine.

I read on another forum that someone had an issue with Hornady CD 115 in their Walther PPS.

it appears the nose of the round got stuck between the barrel feed ramp and the lower ramp.

just read this from another forum where 2 people are having the exact same problem with the Hornady CD 115 as I am

One poster added...."Critical Defense is the only production ammo Wilson Combat recommends NOT to use in their pistols. That rubber tip wreaks havoc when it comes to feeding"

I have some Gold Dot on order and plan to give that a try.

Could be the polymer tip of the HCD rounds might occasionally snag somewhere on the feedramp setup on the PPS or maybe it has to do with the OAL of the rounds. I was never a big fan of the 147gr 9mm rounds due to all the negative info floating around about them feed wise and such, but after trying some recently in my PPS, I really like how they fire and function in it. Mine seems to work well with all weights but the only HCD I have used is the .380 in my SIG P232 and it has functioned flawlessly and accurately. I did wonder a bit about the polymer tip on the HCD and if it might actually cause feeding issues in some guns because the tip sticks out a little from the HP cavity. Give it another go and see what happens oe just switch to another HP round.

If the gun shoots right, and you are left handed, and new to handguns, it could be you. Take it for what it is worth...you could have the best trigger pull in the world, I don't know. But when you said it is shooting right, I thought you would be a lefty.

Keep shootin'.

Here is my trigger bar. It almost looks as if yours is slightly out, we are talking .01 or less, but that seems to be my picture and the angle of the picture I took. I would say yours is fine. (Don't enlarge the image, my phone takes HUGE photos for some reason)
