[quote=bigfatdave;72513]They feel the same because their external dimensions and weight are nearly identical ... both are nicely designed, from an ergonomics point of view. Personally, I prefer the extra round and reduced ammo cost of the 9mm, and mine fits my hand so well that follow-up shots are quick and natural, I imagine that it would be less so with the fo-tay. quote]
I would like to visit the origin of this post with a question. Since the dimensions are identical, I think it is likely the PPS was designed around the 40 cartridge. Even though it was originally introduced in the 9mm it had to have the original slide mass, recoil spring and unlocking travel calibrated for the 40 since the two calibers are identical in every way. Anyone know the facts? |

The part numbers for the recoil spring assemblies are the same for both the 9 X 19 and the 40 S&W. However, the slides for each caliber have different part numbers as do their barrels. I think Walther has added more mass to the slide on the PPS as they did for the P99. The recoil spring assemblies are the same for the 40 & 9X19 P99. I do know that the facts on Walther America cannot be 100% correct. They have a habit of listing the weights for carbon steel pistols and stainless steel guns the same. We all know that stainless does in fact weigh more than carbon steel.

back in the 70's jeff cooper i believe it was suggested rotating your carry ammo every three months. thats what i do. its good to fire a few mags of your carry ammo now and then. im never had a misfire with my carry ammo and i live where its so hot and humid that even montel williams would have a bad hair day. i have had one or two rifle cartridges not fire that were neb and also a couple of .40 (i think they were remingtons) several years ago. sure wouldve been embarrassing if that had been a self-defence situation.

. I'm sorry it was there.I do tend to shoot off my carry ammo everytime I take that particular gun out for practice, otherwise I've come to realize to just let it ride. I've had ammo that is much older than myself that hasn't been stored very well by the looks of it go bang quite fine. Granted I tend to shoot my guns quite frequently too, and I don't exactly carry old ammo xD. Regards, J99 |

I think what Cooper meant was that it's a good idea to not carry the same ammo in your every day carry weapon for over three months. It's been a longggggg time since I read the article but it seems like the reson he suggested that was due to the chance of powder and primers getting fouled due to body moisture. He also mention over all cartridge length getting shorten from cycling it through the weapon many times during loading and unloading. If I had a box of ammo stored in the controlled conditions of my house the age of the cartridges wouldn't concern me. I haven't seen cartridges turn green and the lead get that white crusty stuff on it for a long time. I'm not sure what caused that to happen. Maybe it was due to corrosive primers back then. Boy, firearms and ammo sure have come a long way since I first got interested in shooting. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next twenty years.
