Stan, I was assuming .380 ACP in my "normal" statement. My .32 ACP does hand-eject, but it's a completely different design on the cartridge and rim, and the recoil spring in the PPK for that caliber is much weaker.

So the plot thickens... after reading everyone's comments I decided to dig a little further into the ejection issue via some snap caps. Turns out that the extractor seems to fail to engage the case rim about 25% of the time (you can visibly see that the claw is still raised and failed to click into the case rim) forcing me to raise the barrel and tap the gun to get the round to fall out. And when the extractor does engage, the shell slides free of it well before it's drawn fully out of the chamber, and almost never throws it self clear via the ejection port.
While ejection is solid when fired... not being able to reliably clear a misfire (or unload reliably for that matter) is a real problem, especially since you're more or less forced to field strip the pistol to clear a double feed! So back to the factory it goes ;( Thanks for the help gents, I'll post when it comes back! |

PDX, while it is worth your while talking to Smith & Walther about your problem, it is worth considering the dynamics everything going on. While firing, the extractor probably has more to do with holding the spent round more-or-less in place (so the ejector can smack it) than actually pulling it from the chamber.
It might be worth experimenting with live rounds (in a safe environment) than the snap caps. Has the gun actually misbehaved in a shooting situation, or is this pretty much theoretical? I hate fixing things that aren't actually broken, tho' I've been known to try it from time to time. Moon |

for the record, my .32 interarms PPK ant my .25 TPH hand cycle flawlessly, every time, while my S&W 380 does not. the ejected round tumbles down the mag well. not a problem when not in a firefight. with a mag in place i have had the double feed issue. clears easily enough though, but the first couple of times did have me in kind of an "oh, shi*" moment. i didn't send it in for repair because i didnt feel it needed it. chalked it up to a quirk of the gun and springs and it fires fine. more than fine. 600+ rounds, one FTF dud.
