Has anyone had to replace parts in P99?

Hey everyone,

Has anyone had to replace any broken parts over time in their P99 such an extractor, ejector or striker? Just curious as to what wears out over time and round count.

Thanks

Brandon

Magazine springs, but it was an anomaly as far as I can tell. My gun was built in 2007. I bought it used, but it pretty clearly hadn't been shot much. All 3 mag springs were worn out to the point they wouldn't lock the slide back.

Anyone know what this little guy does?

Striker Assembly on my '03.

Also got a stainless steel guide rod and spring from BT Guiderods. Not because the plastic one broke or had any issues of any kind, but the factory spring was 8 years old at that point and it was "about that time"; but probably still will continue to function for quite some time if I switched back to it.

Anyway after 9 years I do notice a bit of "play" in some parts that I don't remember before. The trigger bar moves left and right a little and the slide a tiny little bit as well. It all seems in working order though and in 2,200+ rounds over 9 years of, not treating it unwell, but treating it like a carry gun (opposed to safe queen), I can count the number of malfunctions (including the striker thing) on one hand.

I recently replaced the slide lock lever on my series one P99. When you would insert a loaded magazine the slide would release and throw a round into battery. I replaced that little piece and it works like new.

Now realize, this gun has had 10,000 rounds or more run through it.

Sear housing block. Cracked on the little tab that the trigger bar rides on. The whole block assembly is all plastic. I put a new guide rod in at the same time since I was already ordering parts. I had called when it originally broke and got a ridiculous price of like $115 or something. I put it off for a number of months and called S&W and the guy quoted me like $11 for it then. Not sure if they thought I needed a complete assembly the first time out, but I just ordered the bare sear block housing and then swapped all of the control parts over to it. Somewhere I did read that its best to change out the guide rod every 2000 rounds or so. Don't quote me on that exact number though.

E.T. Unproven
Years ago I had to replace the locking block, that is the piece fitted into the frame on which the barrel cam (underneath the chamber) rides. The surface was peened or hammered causing an excessive vertical play when the barrel was in battery (slide fully closed). I ordered one at Earl's, installed it and never had problems again. I think the gun was only about two or three years old then. More recently I had to replace the recoil spring assembly because the edge of the plastic guide rod tip chipped. I figure I had to replace it anyway (after ten years). No big deal.

I am trying to find out if anyone else has had a breakage like the one experienced in my Walther P99 (a first gen model in .40S&W). It's only had about 15k rounds through it, and the hottest loads were factory rounds in 180gr.
One of the little pins upon which the slide rides (what is it's real name?) broke off, along with the plastic around it. A small thing, but rendering the weapon non-functional.
This has completely eroded my confidence in this weapon. And while it may not be bad enough to make me rush out and buy a Glock, it is still not what I expected from something supposedly so ruggedly manufactured. There is no other serious wear and tear on the weapon, and the springs are all fine. I had only ever had one stoppage and that was a failure to feed (during a competition, of course).
A gunsmith has 'repaired' it (whatever that means - I've still to get it back - it's not like they could just drop a component in, it's a piece that cracked off!), but I am NOT filled with confidence. Frankly, I'm pretty disappointed. Maybe that's just my unrealistic expectation, but still, why do they make it flimsy? Or is this a one in a million bummer?

You don't have a photo that shows the damage, do you? That would help us nail down what exactly went wrong, and perhaps even why it happened. One thing is certain: I don't recall any similar accounts of this happenening to anyone's P99 here, which may indicate that it was an unlikely occurence. One other question: Did you not consider sending it S&W customer service to an assessment?

I think you are posting about the metal slide rail guides, if they are damaged it's back to Walther for maybe a new frame. them .40s really do a number on handguns.
