P99 Front sight / bullet grain

Hello everyone, I am new to the Walther Forum,

I recently purchased a used P99 AS 9mm. It did not come with extra front sights etc. My question is. What bullet grain is the gun tested with at factory and at what distance? The gun has a #4 front sight installed and I have a ample supply of 147gr winchester grey box. Has anyone else used 147gr and what was your POI, What # front sight are you using for such ammo?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you Kindly

BJ

Welcome!

FAQ VI-2

#4 is the standard one that comes attached to the pistol. The WW 147g are tested and true, as is the P99, you should be just fine.

Being Canadian, do you have the slightly extended barrel? I always thought those looked cool.

Yes we do just slightly. It measures 106mm instead of 102mm. The 9mm versions have this but the .40S&W versions already have a 106mm barrel as standard. I like the looks of it on the P99 as it extends only slightly. Here in Canada we have a stupid rule where any handgun must have a barrel of 106mm or greater or it is classed as phohibited. It was Canada's way of trying to ban probably 80 percent of handguns. Most semi autos seem to have a 4" (102mm) barrel or less with the exception of 1911's, long glocks etc. So the companies importing into Canada just requested 106mm barrel versions from the manufactures. You can own a Glock 26 bit the barrel sticks out well over a inch past the slide, in my opinion looks stupid.

I have heard that the heavier bullets in this case the 147gr tend to group higher. Will this give me a problem with the #4 sight?

The best way to find out is to shoot it. That being said, i believe each sight only changes impact a couple of inches at 25 yards.

So I got out shooting this evening and at 25 yards my groupings were consistently high. About 2.5 - 3 inches from center. Using my winchester super x 147gr.

Have others noticed the same with their P99's with heavier weight bullets?

Heavier bullets leave the barrel as it is rising from recoil I've always been told. I have Trijicons and 147 shoot just right for me.

The gun is grouping well, just high. Shoots perfect using combat sight picture. I'll have to buy the taller # 5 or 6 polymer since mine came second hand without them. I'll try to find some other sights from a Canadian source.

Is their any brand of night sights that people prefer for sight picture and over all quality?

Thanks

I just put a set of Trijicons on mine last night. They provide a good day and night sight picture. I haven't shot with them yet so accuracy remains to be seen.

You might as well ask "Ford or Chevy?" or "Coke or Pepsi?".

You'll get strong recommendations for Meprolights and Trijicons, with some XS thrown in. Meps and Trijicons are the same size, shape and style. They have the same warranty. They're both longstanding companies that make quality products. I've found the Meps to be a few dollars cheaper, but they're roughly the same price.

You can get Trijicons in different front/rear color combos. If you want straight green, either one will do. The warranty on the Trijicons with orange or yellow will be a little shorter than the green, because by nature they don't last as long.

The XS are a different beast. One that you either like or hate. Personally, I hated them.

Those are the facts. The rest is just opinion and none of our opinions really matter; yours is the one that matters.
