Anyone use a P99 in an Action Pistol/ IDPA league?

I've been shooting in my local club's action pistol league (mostly IDPA rules, but some of the rules on equipment is more relaxed).

Anyways, I'm itching to buy a different gun. I've had my gen 3 Glock 17C for a while and while it's serving it's purpose well, I've been paying more attention to Walther's polymers as the PPQ seems to be one heckuva machine.

I'd love to hear from some league shooters in terms of the mag release... The standard buttons on my XDM/Glock are obviously easy to work with, but I was wondering if the mag release location on the P99 is something you just get used to, or do you loose some time swapping them?

Being a police pistol, I'm assuming quickness was important to the designers as they did a nice job of making a super quick trigger system!

I'd probably snatch a used 9mm off of GunBroker as I'd look to keep the price down to approximately what I'd get for the Glock.

I shoot IDPA with a P99AS, 40 S&W. It is a newer model with the longer mag releases. I use index finger on my strong hand to flip the release. This allows me to maintain a good grip without rotating the stock or wrist. I have this in muscle memory now, trigger finger up on side of slide, index finger drops the mag then back to the grip in a single sweep. The range I shoot at has low berms so we are not allowed to raise the muzzle more than a bit which makes strong hand thumb actuation very difficult.

Is there a certain round count that the recoil spring needs replacing? I'm looking at one a guy has who claims it has about 1800 rounds through it. Frankly the round count doesn't matter to me, but if it needs some new wear and tear parts, I'd certainly do it.

Most say swap the recoil spring at 5000 rounds to be safe.

I've shot the P99 in IDPA. It's a great gun for that as well as carry.

I would advise changing the recoil spring only when it needs changing, rather than tying it to a specific round count. One thing is certain: It's good for a lot more rounds than 1,800.

My P99 (made in 1999) was bought used about five years ago, and I've put more than five thousand rounds through it since then. I have no idea how many rounds were put through this pistol by the first owner(s). I replaced the recoil spring last year, but as far as I can tell, it didn't need it done since it was still working just fine. The new spring does feel stronger though. As far as the magazine release, I find the H&K and Walther paddle releases are faster to use than push button releases. I do not compete in firearm competitions at the moment, but plan to sometime later on.

Shot my first Match this past Saturday. Used my P99c 9mm. It was a Zombie match. Head shots only.
Out of 59 shooters I placed 21st not to shabby for this old guy. Match was great and i am now hooked. cant wait for the next match.

'Bird, wait until they bring the bowling pins out...I've never had more fun.

I've decided on ordering a new P99 AS. The QA seems a bit heavy (trigger). My local chain GS has a used P99 QA which appears to be excellent upon handling. Didn't notice much wear on the barrel. Too bad they want $600 for a used one...lol

I'd really like to, but I've got too many things going on at the moment to start something new right now. I'm pretty sure I will later on though. When I do, I'm taking a Walther.
