I wish I had purchased the P88!

I read this tread last night "Lots of folks own Walthers, but a P88?" and it made me think that I wish I had purchased the P88. Back in the late 80's and early 90's I had a chance to purchase one.
I already had the PPK/S stainless steel, the PP blued and my favorite gun of all time, the P5.
If I had only purchased the P88! Then came the P99. I did not purchase that one either but still can and maybe I will. I have seen them for around $499.00 new.
I just purchased my PPS, and I am very glad to have this one, mainly for carrying it for self defense and it's concealment properties.
But the P88! Most of today's guns look similar to each other, I call it the box look. From today's Walthers to Glocks to Springfield's XD's and many others.
The only gun that I would consider to purchase today (outside of the P99) would be the Beretta 92FS. They kept the design and ran with it while Walther discontinued the P88.
Now I have a decision to make. Do I go with the box looking P99 or should I go with the Beretta that looks like a gun should. If I had only purchased the P88!

: ) Figured I'd throw that in before I commented. It's a great gun which I'm glad I bought when one came up for sale. That said, I'd go with the Beretta as I'm partial to it. I've got a 92SB (chosen by the Air Force and since I'm an Air Force vet... and it was made the year I went active-1984) and a 92A1. Both are great guns, but so is the P99 which I have owned but currently do not. The Beretta's have a great feel to them plus there is the military side arm history that goes along with the gun. Either way you'll end up with a good gun, so choose away.

Seems like an easy-enough call to me. Get yourself a P88, and then get yourself a P99. That should take care of your "problem" for a while, at least.

A mere $1,695. Based on what you see on the auction boards, it's only a couple of hundred bucks or so over the standard asking price ... and it's new.
If I had $1695. I'd think about it. LOL

Got this last year for $1100 plus the price of the grips added later.
Keep looking.

If you want the P88 look for a much lower price check out the Bersa Thunder 9.
I bought mine because it is based on the P88.
My Bersa has over 5k downrange and still going strong. The only malf I have had was when I did a 1k torture test with no cleaning or lube. I had one fail to feed that was corrected by pushing on the back of the slide. The gun was filthy.
Also, the Bersa has a much better trigger than my P88. For $350 to $400 retail you can't go wrong with the Bersa, not that I'm going to give up my P88 any time soon.

Are you sure that the $499 guns were not the 88C's that were closed out later?

I think that FMJ (or Firemanjones) was referring to the P99s that are available in the $499 range. You'd be hard-pressed to find a P88C for $499 on this side of the pond, I think, regardless of condition. Most folks who have them think that they were made of pure gold.

The last gun show I attended I saw P99c's 9mm and P99's in .40.
Let me correct myself, they were $399.

I am hoping to 9mm for that price next time.
