slide does not have enough inertia/mass to chamber round in fresh mag

Put another 400 rounds - CCI Mini Mags HP not a single issue - down range. Man, I love this little P22.

Anyway, a consistent repeatable issue I notice is that upon changing mags, if you just thumb the slide release the slide has such little mass or inertia behind it that it just hits up against the first protruding round and stops. With a slight hand on slide push it will chamber the round.

I got in the habit of doing 1 of 2 things to overcome it. 1 - if you hit the mag home hard enough you will rack the slide at the same time which is not ideal, just the nature of this weapon or 2 - push in the mag and when hitting the slide release with your thumb give the gun a sight jolt at the same time and that will improve the forward momentum of the slide and enough to snatch up that round and chamber it.

Anyone know if a better "fix" for this issue? I noticed it is both Walther and after market mags.

Something is binding. That's not right. With no mag, how easy is it to rack the slide?

One of the inherent design issues with the pistol and the reason for the hammer mod and the two breech block mods. Many pistols drag the underside of the slide over the hammer when cocking it. The problem is that .22s can't cycle a stiff spring and on the P22 the energy of the recoil spring can't overcome the hammer dragging under the breech block, catching in the notch between the rear of the sear and safety bar and trying to strip a round from the magazine all at the same time.

One other thing to check is to make sure that your mags are functioning properly. When fully loaded you should still have room to pull the stack of rounds down with the follower button. When the magazine is inserted and locked the bottom of the breech block presses the entire stack down. Make sure the top rounds are staggered prior to loading. When the mag is fully loaded pressure on the top round is greatest making it the hardest to strip.

All of this can be overcome with proper stacking, a hammer that has had the tip removed and if all else fails.....there is the new breech block mod. But, a P22 issue from day one. M1911

This mod will cure all drag issues.

I knew you would have the answer. And I figured it would be a mod.

Yes my mags function as expected.

To bad I can't see the actual mod in your photo as im not sure what to look at. & you say a new breech block mod so can you point me to where I can get the details on just the mod(s) I need to do to address this.

New Breech Block Mod....I can hear Walther groan - RimfireCentral.com Forums

Make sure you read this thread carefully and understand prezackly what is being done before attempting. Don't file too much off, make sure you file on the correct portion of the safety only and leave the bottom of the breech block full thickness where the retaining pin goes through. Once the hammer is cocked it doesn't drag on the bottom of the breech block at all. Won't hang up then. Note, safety bar is filed only when in the fire position and only enough to get the job done. Leave enough material so that the safety still functions. Read carefully. M1911

It shouldn't need a mod to function correctly.

That's no doubt what doctors say every time they have to perform an emergency appendectomy.

That isn't a "thread" that is a dissertation ... man it might be just to much to digest & attempt as much as I want to. I think after scanning some if it I just got to paranoid

I had this problem as well as my son had it also. I replaced the guide rod spring on mine and his (at different times) and the problem went away. All the other stuff, especially 1917's is also an issue. Changing the guide rod spring was easy. Calling the S&W side of the house got me a few guide rod springs at no charge. It was two different calls. I did not ask for two at one time. Just a thought for you to try anyway.
