Barrel Nut Wont Come Off. Help!
New here to the forums, so go easy on me please.
Just bought my P22 and I went to clean it today and the barrel nut will not come off. It does have the wrench slots and it does twist around so that i can remove the nut and barrel cover from the actual barrel, but i cannot remove the nut itself, it just keeps twisting. Am i completely missing something here? |

Why do you want to take it off? I never have.

Let me make sure you are talking about the same part. You are saying the round barrel nut on the muzzle end of the barrel will turn in a counter clockwise direction but won't back off the threads and that that you can't remove it. You aren't talking about the barrel stabilizer on the 5" model? I'd say if the threads or stripped or for some other reason you can't unscrew it that you need to call the 800 number listed in your manual, punch in #3 for customer service and ask S&W to send you a mailing label so you can return the pistol for them to repair. They will fix it. Whatever caused the problem, this is a serious issue that need repairing. It sounds like you can neither remove the nut or properly tighten the barrel against the frame. M1911 |

Thank you for the help. I really did not want to have to send it back to Walther, so i just went and tried it again.
My issue was, the barrel nut was attached to the barrel sleeve, even after i removed it from the actual barrel (i know, sounds crazy). I originally thought that once you unscrewed the nut it would just immediately come off first. It stayed attached the barrel sleeve though, as if they were one piece. I didnt want to try and pull them apart originally but decided to this time. I didnt realize the nut has some sort of o-ring that somewhat keeps it attached to the sleeve, so after a bit of force the nut finally came off. |

you want to change to a threaded barrel nut so you can run a can or a flash hider, etc. so you got the one from tactical innovations that has female on one end and male on the other and a thread protector for the end. you could not get the OEM nut off the barrel to take down the gun for a field strip. unless they used red locktite it should turn right off with the wrench, it may take a little force if they used blue locktite. some heat on the nut from a torch (keep away from plastic with a wet towel) and it will soften up the locktite enough to come off. but i don't understand about the O ring?????
don't have one in mine, nut screws on off like a regular nut and bolt.

I dont know then, but you actually have to pull the nut off the barrel sleeve on mine, its quite strange. I just purchased the firearm two days ago so maybe its an updated model or something? Im not sure. I can possibly post a picture if youre interested at all

mine had the O-ring too. i ripped it and just never got a replacement-------it still holds the barrel on. i think it's just to help keep the barrel nut from vibrating loose, which does happen a lot if you don't crank it down.

no need for pics, i believe you. i bought an OD one last year and it did not have any types of O rings that i could see, and it was brand new. oh well, as long as it shoots fine. i put the tac sol adapter on mine also for an AAC pilot can, works great.

Neither the barrel sleeve or the barrel should turn when the nut is installed or removed. I do support the zinc chamber area of the frame when tightening or removing the nut so that the torque applied against the frame has some support. You need to inspect your frame to make sure the nub is still there that indexes the barrel sleeve. Never heard of what you are describing before. An O ring was added to the barrel nut back in about '06 with the idea that it would help the barrel nut not come loose while shooting. I use blue theadlocker myself. But even with that the barrel nut needs tightening on occasion. M1911 ![]()
