Tested 8 types of Ammo in my P22

As I've mentioned before, My P22 seems to have a terrible trouble with failure to feed. Essentially, I'll be shooting along and then the gun will go "click" and nothing happens. I open the slide to discover there was no round in the chamber. So I just release the slide, next round chambers and I can shoot another 3 or 4 rounds before this will happen again. I've always used the CCI Mini Mags since that is what everyone says works best. I put 40 rounds of each type of ammo and marked down any failures on a spreadsheet I printed out. Here are the results:

The irony is that the gun was actually working a lot better today than normal and only had 1 failure to feed on my regular CCI Mini Mag ammo. Typically going through 40 rounds would produce at least 6 or 7 failures.

I would point out that the only really bad failure was with the Winchester Wildcat 22, which had one round that had to be pried out of the chamber with a pocket knife.

Also the Aguilla was a serious problem, not only in failures but that stuff was very smokey. I felt like I was firing a black powder gun or something, I was nearly choking in the smoke.

Anyway, it looks like the CCI Velocitor will be my choice of ammo for a while. I think I can trust it enough to actually use as a self-defense round.

I think you have a magazine problem. See if you can borrow one or purchase an extra. The magazine must be clean inside and out, the follower must move up and down smoothly and the spring must be strong enough to position the next round properly. Bad magazines will really screw up the function of a semi auto.

Be sure you are firmly gripping the light P22 also.

A round should freely fall into and out of the chamber of a P22. You can check some ammo to see if this is the case. If not you probably need to give the chamber a good cleaning. I just use ole bulk Remington Golden Bullitz and don't have any issues. You shouldn't need that hyper ammo. The only time I've ever had a round not be removed from the mag was with the short slot A mags I got one time. One round, nothing, next round it would fire but somehow a live round got out of the pistol between shots. Crazy I tell you. Short slots. Put long slot As or Bs in and no issues at all. M1911

Oh yeah, don't pry on the rim of a live round. Knock it out backwards with a cleaning rod or wood dowel. If it was a spent case...no problem. M1911

I know, older thread, but I just bought a used P22 yesterday and fired it today having his exact problem using federal bulk ammo. I figured the magazine might be weak, so I went out and purchased another. Same problem. Nearly every mag load produces the above symptom 2-3 times.

The gun has had a deep clean and inspection; don't see any obvious tell tale signs of foul play.

Change of ammunition needed?

Federal bulk does this. Use Remington Golden Bullets.

Federal bulk+P22=gun does not work

CCI Minimag+P22=more expensive than it needs to be

Remington Golden Bullets+P22=gun works great

Remington costs the same as Federal bulk

I have four different .22 semi's. All of them shoot the CCI's, and such, but everyone of them shoots Remington Golden Bullets without issue. Since allmost all of shooting is plinking I have to thank 1917 for the info on Rem.Golden.Bullets. Nice to only have to buy one kind of .22 ammo. I do not mind cleaning my handguns and do so after everytime I am at the range. I should add I usually shoot 1000 rounds or better everytime I go. (outdoor range, so no hurry or paying for indoor time).

Whats the difference between these two CCI minimags?

40gr, solid bullet
36gr, hollow point

I presume your test was the 36 grain HP.. would it be safe to assume the solid bullet would test the same?
