Go to Amazon and search for "gerber fast draw knives." They are high quality and inexpensive. I got the... Gerber Fast Draw ...and I love it! Fine quality blade, opens effortlessly, locks securely and has a nice clip on it. I clip it at the back edge of my right front jeans pocket.

Been carrying a Zero Tolerance 0350 for two years. Love it. Been through about 10 different knives over the years with some too small and some too large. The 0350 hits the sweet spot for me in size and ability to carry.

For a folder, I prefer a lock-back like the single blade Gerber. The Gerber will hold an edge, it is lightweight, tough, and will clean a trout as well as any. Good at opening packages too. The plastic body will not wear a hole in your pocket either.

It is funny: Your concealed pistol permit will not allow you to carry certain knives.

The concept of a concealed handgun permit is asisine. Amazing my state is OK with me concealing a handgun but not a throwing star.

I admittedly don't have much experience with knives and would consider myself a bit of a knife noob. That being said, I do like the feel in my hand and the minimal weight of my Spyderco Delica FFG. The deployment hole is very easy to use and it's a great little slicer. I have no experience with any knives other than Spyderco yet since I'm so new to it all. Overall I think it makes for a good all around size for an EDC item.

I shopped around for a non-folder about a year ago and I really liked the size and shape of the Cold Steel Roach Belly. A VERY inexpensive knife. I think I paid about $8.99 plus some shipping. I was very impressed with the quality of the blade. And let me tell you, I have never seen an edge so sharp, even on a razor blade! Ouch! The only thing that needed some improvement was the smooth plastic handle. So I wrapped some hockey tape around it and it is good to go.

.
I've never really understood throwing stars. The ones I've seen would cause a shallow wound but they don't seem especially deadly. Just can't see one as my EDC.

That was my point. Throwing stars would cause a superficial wound at best but my concealed handgun permit in Virginia only applies to handguns. Its crazy Virginia considered a throwing star something worth making illegal. I don't want to carry a throwing star I was just pointing out its weird Virginia considers throwing stars are some type of extremely deadly weapon compared to a handgun.

Hard to go wrong with a Spyderco Delica for around $50. I carry a Delica or a Spyderco Native. Great knives, hold and edge well and Spyderco has excellent customer service if you have a problem with your knife.

Made in the USA also - Golden, Colorado, USA, Earth (what mine says on the blade).

Dave_I - I like the reverse tanto Benchmade blades a lot... At least the one on the 950 Rift.

If you have any ideas of using your EDC knife as a self defense/fighting instrument I strongly recommend a fixed blade. I personally like the Benchmade Nim Cub with a custom kydex sheath on your belt.

If you're looking for a tool-knife, I'd recommend a multi-tool. There are some very slim/light offerings for pocket carry. This provides much more utility in a similar size package. I'm using a Leatherman tti Charge, but it's a beast. A decent lightweight option is the Leatherman Skeletool... Just don't try to build an engine with it an be surprised when it fails.

If you insist on the idea of a a folder that can be pressed into use as a self defense tool but also be generally useful... Id go with a Benchmade model with the Axis lock (Rift is my fav) or an Emerson with the Wave feature.
