Spreewerke P-38 Info

My Dad brought back a P-38 with holster while serving in Italy in 1945. It has been in the family ever since. It is a cyq model and matching numbers. It has the Nazi eagle stamps and the machining is rough. Serial number is 5611 with a Z stamp. The magazine is marked P38 with a U underneath. The rear has a large jvd with a smaller Nazi eagle and WOA706 over it. Also, why does it have S and F (English) instead of the German equilivalent?

Looks like your Spreewerk-made pistol was made in February of 1945. Photos? We always like to see pictures of nice old Walthers.

A couple of competing theories exist as to to your question about the Safety designations.

Theory No. 1: The F and S designations (for Fire and Safe) began in the 1880s or 1890s. The safety device is patented, and the F and S were in common usage in countries with alphabets derived from Roman characters, as are both English and German.

Theory No. 2: The German equivalent of Fire (Feuer) and Safety (Sicherheit) also begin with an F and an S.

Welcome to the forum; enjoy your time here.
