P.38 Walther sear vs. Spreewerk sear

Is there any difference between a Walther P.38 sear and a Spreewerk sear, or can you even tell? Ordered a WWII P.38 sear, from a recommended member of this forum, for my Spreewerk, circa 1943, (has a broken sear 'tooth'). After replacing, have misfire problems,.....slide blows back, loads, ejects rounds normally, but concerned about replacement sear causing a subtle difference in the hammer drop. Fires every other time, basically, have to recock and drop hammer twice on same round. All other functions seem normal. Any ideas? Should I have specified only a Spreewerk sear?

No difference in manufacturers. The only possible difference would be the early Walthers are stamped 359. As long as it is a closed sear, they are the same. There was an experimental "horseshoe" sear. Good luck finding one of those from a parts vendor.

But MGMike is not a gunsmith, and this is a "hands-on" problem. I suggested to drgreg that he should send the gun to Tom Heller.

I will, however, offer one thought --not to this case in particular, but to misfire situations in general. The first and most obvious suspect is the ammunition. This possibility is easily ruled out by trying fresh, U.S. factory-made ammo of known quality.

Trying the original ammo in another gun of the same caliber is probative, but not conclusive. It leaves room for too many variables.

Many thanks go to Tom Heller for repairing my CYQ P.38! I replaced the broken sear with Tom's WWII sear, but was still having problems with misfire every other time. Sent it in to Tom and turns out the firing pin was a little 'slow' or not functioning properly. Anyhow, Tom replaced the firing pin with another E/88 firng pin. Just got it back and put 15 rounds thru it without a problem. Am very happy with all the help I got on this forum and esp. with Tom Heller, gunsmith 'extraordinaire!' Definitely worth it!! As far as pics, I have a 'before and after' of the sears. See if you can tell which one has the broken tooth. Should be obvious. Pics to follow.
