The Newer P-38 Muzzle?

Gang- Why did Walther change from the original P-38 muzzle to the new one? I liked that older muzzle!

The WWII P38 barrels were made from one forged piece of steel. Postwar barrels were made with a jacket and rifled liner. The early liners were pressed into the jacket and pinned. Later barrel liners had a narrow and then a wider ring at the rear to help hold it in place. This ring visible at the rear of the chamber. If you look closely at the muzzle on a postwar P-38 or P1 you can see the liner inside the barrel jacket...

Thanks so much for that info! At first, I was bummed out because the new muzzle made the P-38 look totally different. Imagine if that was done to the Luger. :O
Thank you Milspec!

Interesting. What happens if a lined barrel is cut down to make a shortee? I guess the pin will hold it in place, and friction. Or just friction for unpinned barrels? But the liner could crimp during straight or lath cutting?

Thanks TANFOGLIO, nice photos. I also plan to leave about an inch and have it threaded for an extension/ thread protector/ flash suppressor/ silencer... What do you recommend as the standard thread count & diameter, presumably metric? If you get to Washington DC I'll buy you a beer - or two.
