Question P38 Short Barrel

Sponsored Links
I recently purchased a short barrel for the P38. Kind of like the P38K, except it did not have a front sight and I need to make a decision on which is best to do to have a front sight. Would you suggest that I have the sight put on the barrel or on the end of the slide. My instincts tell me to have the sights put on the short barrel.

The P38k sights are on the slide. If you want it to look authentic, that is where the sight belongs.

But, the barrel-mounted sight is kinda cool looking as well.

And, bnz's "sub-compact" is uber-cool.

Sight on a short barrel doesnt do anything for me. I think the sight on the slide has a more classic streamlined look in the p38K

P38 Short Barrel

Thanks for all your comments and pictures. Gave me a lot to think about, as I think it's more cosmetics and authenticity than about accuracy.

Unless you are going to build it on a P4, rather than a P38, there is no possibility of authenticity, so you can put it wherever it pleases you.

If you decide to put the front sight on the slide, you'll likely wind up having to weld or braze and then refinish the slide, which should be avoided.

On the other hand the barrel can be sleeved quite easily if you have enough stub sticking out in front of the slide to keep it from looking goofy. Later, when you tire of it (and you WILL) you can sell the barrel to some idiot and put the gun back together with its original barrel the way it belongs.
